Limestones have today a massive demand from the international market, having surpassed granites or marbles as the main export natural stone from Portugal. Due to this considerable growth in demand, regular extractions areas have expanded considerably and new extraction areas have appeared in the landscape. We present below the most representative limestone extraction areas in Portugal, where some of the most important limestones are extracted.
Moca Creme, Moleanos, Rosal and others
Serra D´Aire e Candeeiros - Leiria/Santarem
This area is considered the limestone center of Portugal, where the most relevant limestones are extracted and it represents over 50% of the total limestone extracted in Portugal.
Ataija
Ataija - Aljubarrota
Located in the border of Serra D´Aire e Candeeiros and next door to the Moleanos quarries, the Ataija area has few quarries that extract the Ataija Creme and Ataija Azul.
Pero Pinheiro
Pero Pinheiro - Sintra
Once considered the heart of limestone extraction in Portugal (and with historical importance), Pero Pinheiro area has today a more modest extraction of limestones like the well-known Lioz.
Lourinha
Lourinha - Torres Vedras
Despite its limited extraction area, Lourinha has today a growing number of quarries that extract the new hot grey limestone in Portugal: Azul Lourinha. Despite its small size, it has a certain importance.
Fatima
Fatima - Leiria
This area that is located in the outskirts of Serra D´Aire e Candeeiros hosts several quarries that extract the Fatima limestone. Despite its limited size, it has potential for growth.
